Position Description

Department: Fire and EMS
Position Title: Fire Fighter
Reports to: Fire Officers

General Description and Duties of the Position (The following duties are normal for this position; however, they are not to be construed as all-inclusive and other duties and tasks may be required and assigned.

Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls, controls and extinguishes all types of fires, protects life and property, and maintains equipment and apparatus of the Fire & EMS Department. Works under direct supervision and in accordance with department policies, practices, procedures, rules and regulations. Work is reviewed through periodic performance reports, observation of results achieved and one-on-one conferences.

  1. Receives alarms and monitors radio messages responding to fire alarms and other emergency calls.
    2. Use equipment such as trucks, hose, ladders, power tools, respirators, extinguishers, pike poles, bars lifelines, etc., in fighting fires.
    3. Selects hose nozzle and directs stream of water or chemicals, depending on type of fire.
    4. Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to assist individuals from burning structures.
    5. Creates openings in structures for ventilation or entrance, using forcible entry tools such as an ax, chisel, crowbar, electric saw, core cutter and other power equipment.
    6. Protects property from water and smoke by use of waterproof salvage covers, sweeping of water, smoke ejectors, deodorants and removal of debris.
    7. Administers first aid and artificial respiration to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke.
    8. Performs rescue work of persons in danger from fire, drowning, accident, etc., and assist in medical emergencies as a driver for an ambulance.
    9. Communicates with supervisor during fire, using portable two-way radio.
    10. Performs general maintenance work relative to fire department apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, grounds and hydrants.
    11. Participates in training drills, demonstrations and courses in hydraulics, pump operation and maintenance and firefighting techniques.
    12. Drive or ride and operation department vehicles and equipment to scene of fire or other emergency under special safety regulations.
    13. Make visits with Fire Inspection personnel to become familiar with locations, industries, buildings, floor plans standpipe connections, power sources, hydrant location, explosive and flammable storage areas, etc.
    14. Assist in after operations vehicle and equipment maintenance
    15. Performs other related duties as necessary.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of firefighting methods, techniques, and practices.
  • Considerable knowledge of fire prevention, and equipment/apparatus used in fire
    fighting services.
  • Considerable knowledge of regulations, ordinances, and laws regarding a fire
    fighting services department.
  • Knowledge of streets and physical layout of the district.
  • Knowledge of firefighting equipment, practices and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to sustain considerable physical effort involving performance of duties in situations of personal danger, with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to take and maintain safety precautions in performance of work.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Must have and maintain a valid State of Wisconsin driver’s license. Must be certified as a Wisconsin Certified Fire Fighter I. Must be certified and maintain a CPR and Basic First Aid card. Must have NIMS ICS-100 and ICS-700 and be able to obtain additional certifications as required.

Additional Requirements:

The individual must comply with the employer’s random drug and alcohol testing requirements.
