Position Description 

Department: Fire and EMS Position 
Title: Emergency Medical Technician 
Reports to: EMS Officers 

General Description and Duties of the Position (The following duties are normal for this position; however, they are not to be construed as allinclusive and other duties and tasks may be required and assigned. 

Responds to emergency calls, protects life and property, and maintains equipment and apparatus of the Fire & EMS Department. Works under direct supervision and in accordance with department policies, practices, procedures, rules and regulations. Work is reviewed through periodic performance reports, observation of results achieved and one-on-one conferences. 

  1. Receives alarms and monitors radio messages responding to emergency calls. 
    2. Administers first aid and artificial respiration and where necessary performs and administers Basic Life Support to persons in danger from fire, drowning, accident, etc. and assists in medical emergencies.
    3. Communicates with supervisor during emergency, using portable two-way radio; relays instructions, orders and information. 
    4. Performs general maintenance work relative to fire department apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, and grounds.
    5. Participates in training drills, demonstrations, and courses of emergency medical techniques. 
    6. Operate department vehicles to the scene of the emergency, observing state emergency vehicle laws, and operate emergency equipment safely. 
    7. Assist in after operations vehicle and equipment maintenance. 
    8. Performs other related duties as necessary.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  •  Considerable knowledge of emergency medical services methods, techniques, and practices.
  • Considerable knowledge of equipment/apparatus used in emergency services.
  • Considerable knowledge of regulations, ordinances, and laws regarding an emergency services department. 
  • Knowledge of emergency medical equipment, practices and procedures.
  • Ability to understand, follow and effectively carry out instructions.
  • Ability to take and maintain safety precautions in performance of work.
  • Ability to sustain considerable physical effort involving performance of duties in situations of personal danger with exposure to all types of weather conditions and heights.
  • Ability to lift and carry 140 pounds, sit, stoop, crawl, bend, climb, and twist while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • Ability to maintain safety precautions in performance of all work. 

Education and Experience: 

High school diploma or equivalent is required.  Must have and maintain a valid State of Wisconsin driver’s license.  Must be certified as a Wisconsin Emergency Medical Technician. Must maintain an American Heart Association CPR card. Must have NIMS ICS-100 and ICS-700 and be able to obtain additional certifications as required. 

Additional Requirements:

The individual must comply with the employer’s random drug and alcohol testing requirements.
